Jodi Rozental is very proud to be serving as cantorial soloist for Temple Judea since 2003. She brings to this congregation her passion for Jewish music and spiritual inspiration, finding much joy in nurturing the souls of this wonderful community through song.
Jodi was born in Philadelphia and moved to Florida with her family when she was 8 years old. Her family joined Temple Sinai of North Dade, which became her second home until she went away to college. She immediately joined the youth choir and participated under the direction of Cantor Irving Shulkes for 6 years. Cantor Shulkes became Jodi’s mentor, preparing her to begin leading services at the early age of 14 for both Friday evenings and Saturday mornings. That was the beginning of Jodi’s cantorial training. She filled in every summer for 5 consecutive years, singing a cappella as well as accompanying herself on guitar. During those same years, Jodi was a song leader and music director at Sinai Day Camp, and also became a song leader for SNFTY Youth Group.
Jodi received a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts, beginning her studies at the University of Florida in Gainesville, and completing her last year at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton. While attending school at UF, she was one of the founders of the Reform Jewish Student Organization, and lead High Holy Day Services for the students who were not able to go home for the holidays. Additionally, while in college, she was hired for a summer as the camp music program coordinator of Camp Shwayder, in Idaho Springs, Colorado.
After completing college, she moved back to South Florida, and became the music program director of Sinai Academy, teaching classes, holidays, and organizing the end of the year Shabbat School Production with the entire academy.
Prior to her start at Temple Judea, Jodi filled in as cantorial soloist at Temple Dor Dorim in Weston, Florida.
Currently, in addition to singing regularly for Shabbat, B’nai Mitzvah, festivals and holidays, Jodi is the director of Kol Malachim, Voice of the Angels, the extraordinary adult volunteer choir of Temple Judea; as well as the creator of The Rhythm & Jews Band. Both Kol Malachim and The Rhythm & Jews Band can be heard monthly at Shabbat services. Jodi is also a member of The Women Cantors Network.
When she is not on the bimah, Jodi sings in various cantorial concerts, performs at parties and weddings, and entertains audiences in the tri-county area with her one-woman show, Love Around the World, in which she sings 5 different languages and tells her comical story of her search for “a nice Jewish guy.”
Happily married to Ruben Rozental, Jodi lives in Fort Lauderdale. She has one step-daughter, Melanie, 4 four-legged furry felines: Pixsie, Midnight, Jimsy and Bubbaloo; and Maggie, a shepherd-lab mix.
